Why are we the way we are? In this unit the student will analyze information, classify according to characteristics, and organize graphically in order to determine patterns. There are many opportunities to compare and contrast in order to identify common attributes. It introduces the concept of human genetics, from tongue rolling to widows’ peaks.

Go Figure – Putting the Solving in Math Problems
From sugar cube pyramids to hula-hoops, the student will explore multi-layered math quandaries designed to develop creative problem-solving skills while reinforcing math concepts. Authentic problems require the student to develop original strategies rather than following a set sequence of procedures.

Traces – Artifacts from the Ancients
What can we learn from the traces left by ancient peoples? The students will explore art, structures, and relics as they investigate the unsolved mysteries of America’s first settlers. They will delve into the controversy regarding the ownership of these remnants of lost civilizations. They will also develop criteria for evaluating the credibility of sources.

Catch My Drift – Keeping Current in Oceanography
From the physical properties of the ocean to the fascinating marine plant and animal life, this unit focuses on projects that will help students understand why we need to take care of the earth's oceans. Critical and creative thinking, as well as independent research activities lead students to see the interdependence of the marine ecosystem.
